How we grow grass at The Barry Farm

Just wanted to give a quick update onto how out summer pastures are holding up. According to the USDA our region is in both severe and long term drought. Those of us in the animal business who desire to break the dependence on grain and work toward a grass fed and pasture based system have our work cut out for us. Hope is on our side at The Barry Farm though. We spend a great deal of time and research in learning to be responsible grazers which starts with caring about the health, temperature, cover and quality of the soil. Taking care of soil will take care of the grasses that grow in them.

The picture you are looking at above is a panorama of one if our summer pastures. It is a borrowed pasture. Renee and I take very seriously the Managment of other people’s land and desire to leave it better than we found it. Although not many can appreciate the soil , water and land benefit of rotational grazing, we would certainly know the difference. To the left of the picture is where we had grazed 3 weeks ago coming in young and green. In the middle it is short brown and exposed and to the right where the sheep are the grass is purple tipped and maturing. A beautiful dance. To over simplify we use the sheep as pruners to prune thousands of grass and forage plants back to their growing stage. Go little farm Go
